The right choice depends on the damage, the quality of the available engine, turnaround time, evidence and warranty — not only the headline price.
| Factor | Rebuild original engine | Replacement engine |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Original unit retained | Code and compatibility must be verified |
| Evidence | Internal condition can be measured during strip | History may depend on supplier records |
| Speed | Machining and parts may extend time | Can be quicker if correct unit is in stock |
| Specification | Written parts and machining schedule | Used, reconditioned or remanufactured definition required |
| Warranty | Usually tied to rebuilder and installer | May split responsibility between supplier and installer |
Choose by total installed cost
Include diagnosis, recovery, removal, fitting, fluids, belts, turbo or injectors, coding, VAT, core charges and the value of downtime. A cheaper engine with poor inclusions can cost more overall.
